An oyster farmer with 17 years of experience under his waders, Ewan McAsh, has launched Oceanfarmr, a platform which allows oyster farmers to streamline their own unique aquaculture practice to scale production to unprecedented levels.

Australia's natural oyster reefs have faced significant loss, with over 90% of these biodiverse ecosystems disappearing due to over-exploitation and habitat degradation. Oyster farming has been recognized as a way to mitigate some of the ecosystem service loss caused by the decline of natural reefs. However, there is a need to measure and improve the biodiversity value of oyster farms. This blog post introduces the "Farm to Restore" pilot study, which aims to explore methods and metrics for measuring biodiversity on oyster farms and incentivise farmers to enhance biodiversity while earning income from biodiversity credits.

Ewan McAsh is the founder and CEO of Oceanfarmr (originally SmartOysters) – a startup that aims to streamline production and open up access to finance for 400,000 producers of oysters, mussels and seaweed around the world.

Finally, platforms are being built to bridge the gap and simplify financing. Oceanfarmr Finance is the first to market. In tropical seas, ORRAA is working with Mari Oceans and Sea Power to help seaweed farmers access microcredit in Indonesia and Tanzania, respectively.
